Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are effective long-acting, reversible contraceptives. At the time of this project, Leicester Sexual Health was an integrated sexual health service that provided care to the residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (United Kingdom), which has a population of approximately 1.1 million (with approximately 360 000 individuals living in the city). Leicester has high levels of ethnic diversity, with around half of the city’s population being part of ethnic minority groups.1 The service inserted 1155 IUDs from April 2024 to March 2025 (performed by six doctors and three nurses). Clinician feedback highlighted that the appointment time (30 min) was insufficient to counsel and fit an IUD as per the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH) IUD pre-insertion checklist criteria2. An anonymised clinician survey of 29 IUD appointments was undertaken between February and March 2024, which revealed that 10.3% (3/29) of the appointments were completed within 30 min. Most clinicians indicated that the actual appointment duration ranged between 41 and 50 min.
