2025 is proving a challenging year for climate action. After his inauguration as US president for a second term in January, Donald Trump immediately withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement, reversed domestic climate protections, encouraged drilling for oil, gas, and coal, and defunded the World Health Organization. In his destructive slipstream, the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand rolled back on climate protections, and the Brazilian government approved drilling for oil in the Amazon basin.1234 The UK government remains committed to its net zero targets, but anti-climate rhetoric grows among political parties, with Reform UK rejecting net zero targets and the Conservatives promising to scrap the 2008 Climate Change Act if they get into power.
