Aine McShane was born in Camlough, County Armagh, in 1963 to parents Mona and Frank. She attended Our Lady’s Grammar School in Newry and studied medicine at Queen’s University, Belfast, where she forged enduring friendships and met her future husband, Tony Duffy, through the university’s canoe club. She graduated in 1987 achieving a distinction in medicine and surgery. She went on to work in a variety of clinical posts at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.
