My father Robert—Bob to those who knew him—was born in Romford, Essex, in 1948. He took his O and A levels at Brentwood School; he was placed in the medical stream but enjoyed playing football for the school team far more than his studies. Despite this he went on to train at the London Hospital and, once qualified, he worked at Colchester and Rochford hospitals.
