Charles Bonnet syndrome is the name given to the vivid hallucinations that sometimes follow deterioration in vision. Patients are often reluctant to mention them, but the condition is common. An interview study of older adults living with the syndrome suggests that, besides being distressing, the hallucinations can distract attention from real hazards (Age and Ageing doi: 10.1093/ageing/afag125). Charles Bonnet syndrome isn’t just a neurological curiosity, but a potential problem for mobility and safety.
