While still working as a doctor Fiona Haslam began research into the relation between medicine and art, which resulted in her being awarded a doctorate from the University of St Andrews in 1992. Drawing on contemporary medical treatises, letters, newspaper reports, journals, and diaries, her studies focused on works by artists such as William Hogarth and Thomas Rowlandson that were dense with medical imagery.
