In hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, the capacity to mount a functional virus-specific T-cell response has long been considered the principal, if not the sole, immunological determinant of viral control.1 However, accumulating clinical evidence increasingly points to a central role for HBV-specific B cells, not only in preventing infection but also in shaping the outcome of therapeutic interventions.
