Pam (née Atkinson) was born in Harrow, London. Her medical training was in Bristol at a time when there were very few female medical students. She took up various appointments in the city, followed by an internship in Kings Lynn. In 1957 she moved to Cambridge and married Don Fisher, a chemical engineer. She was appointed accident and emergency senior house officer at the old Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
