The introduction of the contraceptive pill in 1961 heralded a sexual revolution for women in the UK. For Jill Tattersall, who had trained in obstetrics and gynaecology, it proved a career defining moment and she soon moved into the new field of family planning. At the time there was considerable stigma around sex outside marriage, and family planning services catered only for married women. Tattersall and her fellow Sheffield clinician, Libby Wilson, sought to rectify this.
