Neil Smart, consultant surgeon at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, leader of clinical trials, and editor in chief of Colorectal Disease, couldn’t give his lecture at last year’s annual meeting of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. He had been scheduled to talk about his work investigating problems in colorectal surgery, for which he was widely acclaimed.
