Background Most children with congenital heart disease are now surviving into adulthood, hence the focus of care has shifted towards function and physical activity. The importance of physiotherapy and rehabilitation post-cardiac surgery has been highlighted in multiple international guidelines. Following cardiac surgery at GOSH children receive inpatient physiotherapy, however they are routinely discharged without ongoing support. The aim of this QI project was to explore patients’ awareness of physiotherapy pre-surgery and understand what information would be beneficial post-surgery, to help guide the development of information resources.Method Data was collected using a bespoke, anonymised electronic questionnaire. Children between 8-17 years of age who had undergone cardiac surgery, were invited to participate with the support of their parents/carers. Data was collected between April-May 2025.Results Five male patients, age between 9-17 years were included. Four surgeries (80%) were planned, with three first surgeries (60%). Pre-operative advice received varied ( figure 1). All patients saw a physiotherapist during their admission. The advice received as an inpatient is displayed in figure 2. All patients knew the role of physiotherapy and four (80%) were expecting to see a physiotherapist during their admission. On discharge from hospital, four patients (80%) were given verbal advice, with two (40%) also receiving written information. Advice on discharge was provided by physiotherapists, doctors, nurses and play specialists (figure 3). Figure 4 displays patient confidence on discharge. Feedback related to information resources included verbal or written advice (80%) and online resources (20%).Conclusions Whilst all patients understood the role of physiotherapy, they received variable information prior to admission and on discharge. They reported varying degrees of confidence in returning to school and PE. Only a small number of children were involved in this study and further data should be collected. Creating an information resource would ensure standardised information is provided.Abstract 134 Figure 1Patient reported physiotherapy advice received pre-operativelyAbstract 134 Figure 2Patient reported physiotherapy advice received during admissionAbstract 134 Figure 3Patient reported physiotherapy advice received post-operativelyAbstract 134 Figure 4Patient reported confidence completing daily activities on discharge post-cardiac surgery
